Highlights of Doupotang Waterfall
During low water periods, the flow of the Baishui River is modest, its waters clear and tranquil, rendering Doupotang Waterfall delicate and picturesque. The layers of water gently cascade down the sloping surface, scattering evenly and lightly over the calcareous terrace, resembling a thin, translucent veil or the spread of a delicate silk fan shimmering in the sunlight, earning it the nickname “Bride’s Veil.”
However, when the flood season arrives, the waters of the Baishui River carry a large volume of sediment washed down from upstream, turning the flow into a turbid yellow torrent. During this time, Doupotang Waterfall sheds its serene beauty, transforming into a formidable and majestic sight. Additionally, the caves formed by the accumulation of calcareous deposits on the left side of the waterfall produce a unique “steam whistle” effect as vast volumes of floodwater pass through, emitting a deep and resonant roar, hence Doupotang Waterfall is also known as the “Roaring Waterfall.”
Another distinctive feature of Doupotang Waterfall is its broad and flat terrace below the cascade. This expanse is dotted with dozens of small jade-green pools of varying sizes, some shallow, only tens of centimeters deep, while others plunge several meters down. These pools are home to fish and shrimp, and it’s common to see local Buyi people using nets to catch them.
