Luoke Island on Lugu Lake – Location and Highlights

Located within the Lugu Lake scenic area, Luoke Island (洛克岛) is situated in the vicinity of Mukua Village, Yanyuan County, Lijiang, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Formerly known as Xiwa Island due to the abundance of snakes that emerged on the island after summer rains, it earned the nickname “Snake Island.” However, it is more commonly recognized as Luoke Island, named after Dr. Locke, an American botanist who resided there for eight years.

Cloaked in dense vegetation, Luoke Island boasts numerous plant species, with the largest tree on the island having been personally planted by Dr. Locke in the early 1920s, now designated as a first-class protected plant in Lugu Lake. At the central peak of the island lies a spot known as “Mani Heap,” surrounded by prayer flags, faded by the elements yet serving as Luoke Island’s hallmark.

Beyond its lush flora, Luoke Island is steeped in rich historical and cultural heritage. During his tenure, the magistrate of the Yongning Chieftain’s Office, Ayunshan, constructed a villa on the island for hosting gatherings and official meetings. With the involvement of Locke, Ayunshan’s Western friend, the villa’s design and décor adopted a blend of Eastern and Western styles. Luoke Island still retains furniture personally designed by Dr. Locke, including lounge chairs and activity tables, as well as trees he planted and pavilions he constructed, all contributing to the island’s unique charm.

To reach Luoke Island, visitors typically embark from the Daluoshui Pier, with the journey taking approximately 30 minutes. Here, tourists can admire the picturesque scenery of the lake and immerse themselves in the tranquility and beauty of Lugu Lake. Moreover, owing to Luoke Island’s distinctive history and cultural background, it has become a must-visit destination for many tourists exploring Lugu Lake.
