Highlights of Zhedong Xiaojiuzhai
Baiyan Creek
The name “Xiaojiuzhai” (Little Jiuzhaigou) is derived from its unique stream scenery. Baiyan Creek, a 6-kilometer-long stream, meanders through the forest, with crystal-clear water revealing its bed, continuous pools, magnificent waterfalls, and scattered peculiar rocks. The interplay of the stream with the mountains and bamboo forests creates picturesque natural landscapes reminiscent of poetry and painting. Along the banks of Baiyan Creek, the winding mountains and dense bamboo forests, accompanied by the sounds of birdsong, add a touch of natural harmony and tranquility. The area is also rich in vegetation, with various rare plants and animals such as black snails, stream fish, and kingfishers thriving within the park.
Antike Tempel
Nestled in the middle section of Baiyan Creek, Baiyan Temple is a two-entry, four-courtyard-style building. Records show that Baiyan Temple was first built during the Qian De era of the Song Dynasty, boasting a history of over a thousand years. Meanwhile, eastablished in Tang Dynasty, Xiangji Temple on Linggang Mountain spans the ridge of the mountain with towers on both the east and west sides, and reatures a gate at the foot of the mountain. Unlike typical Buddhist temples, Xiangji Temple enshrines the gods of thunder and ancestors. The temple fair of Xiangji Temple is held annually on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth lunar month.
Numerous Stories
Additionally, Zhedong Xiaojiuzhai is steeped in many renowned folk legends and touching stories of the revolutionary struggle. Zhilin Village, where the scenic area is located, is known as a famous “Anti-Japanese Village” and served as the headquarters of the Zhejiang Eastern Special Committee of the Communist Party of China. It was also the site of the Cinan Project Task Force and the temporary headquarters of the Third Northern Guerrilla Command. Baiyan Temple within the scenic area is also a red historical site. During the later stages of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Baiyan Temple served as the rear hospital of the General Guerrilla Regiment, providing medical care for wounded soldiers from various units.
