Ancient Longzhong Scenic Area, Xiangyang – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and Highlights

Ancient Longzhong Scenic Area (古隆中景区), located in Xiangyang City, Hubei Province, spans a total area of 18,000 acres, with Zhuge Grass Hut as its focal point. It encompasses Longzhong Mountain, Leshan Mountain, Daqishan Mountain, Xiaoqishan Mountain, Zhuge Temple Gorge, Guangde Temple Gorge, and more. This site holds historical significance as the place where Zhuge Liang, the renowned statesman and military strategist from the Three Kingdoms period (over 1,800 years ago), secluded himself. It is here that the famous story of “Liu Bei‘s three visits to the thatched cottage” from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms took place, and the well-known “Longzhong Dialogue” originated.

Xiangyang’s Longzhong and Nanyang in Henan Province have long disputed the title of “Zhuge’s farming land.” However, for ordinary tourists, this historical contest may not hold much significance. After all, the two regions have been vying for this title for centuries, and most of the structures within the Ancient Longzhong Scenic Area have been reconstructed in recent years.

Highlights of Ancient Longzhong

Wuhou Shrine

Originally constructed during the Jin Dynasty, the Wuhou Shrine is dedicated to Zhuge Liang and sits on the mountainside of Longzhong. Throughout history, it has been rebuilt and renovated multiple times, with the current structure dating back to the 38th year of Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1699 AD), rebuilt by the historian Jiang Xing. The shrine features a four-courtyard, three-level platform architectural style. Inside the main hall, visitors can admire sculptures of Zhuge Liang, his descendants Zhuge Zhan and Zhuge Shang, and pay homage. Additionally, the shrine houses a more than 400-year-old golden osmanthus tree, believed to possess spiritual significance.

Zhuge Grass Hut

The Zhuge Grass Hut served as Zhuge Liang’s residence and study during his time in Longzhong. It is a replica of the Han-style architecture and has been featured in TV dramas such as “Zhuge Liang.” The hut is furnished with items like wooden oxen and flowing horses, as well as the “Scholar Tree,” providing visitors with a glimpse into Zhuge Liang’s daily life and activities in Longzhong.

Longzhong Academy

Originally established during the Five Dynasties period as the “Wulingwang Study Hall,” Longzhong Academy merged with the Guangde Temple Academy in the late Yuan Dynasty, collectively known as the Longzhong Academy. Covering an area of 3600 square meters with a building area of 1123.44 square meters, the academy comprises six sections: the Preface Hall, Inspiration Hall, Diligence Hall, Integrity Hall, Exhortation Hall, and Outlook Hall. It offers insights into Zhuge Liang’s life, showcasing his journey from aspiring to succeed, diligent governance, and dedication to education for his children.
