Highlights of Jiabang Rice Terraces

The rice terraces cultivated by the Miao ethnic group follow the contours of the mountains, adapting to the changes in terrain. The unique topography of Jiabang determines that the size and form of the terraces vary based on the elevation, slope, and size of the mountainsides. Here, the maximum size of a terrace is rarely more than one mu, with most fields limited to one or two rows, forming fragmented plots, some as small as a winnowing basket, and the longest terrace reaching up to two to three hundred meters.

The beauty of the terraces unfolds like a picturesque painting throughout the seasons. The months of April and May mark the season of water irrigation, where the terraces, after being irrigated, shimmer with a silvery glow, accentuating their graceful and winding contours. In summer, the terraces showcase waves of lush green rice paddies, resembling ribbons of vibrant green swaying in the wind. The golden hues of harvested rice, combined with the green cover crops and the tranquil Miao hanging-foot houses scattered across the fields, create a stunning landscape resembling a beautiful Chinese ink painting.

The terraced fields are interspersed with the distinctive hanging-foot houses of the Miao people, resembling planets dotting the galaxy. Adjacent to the Jache River, with abundant rainfall throughout the year, the terraced fields and Miao hanging-foot houses are shrouded in morning mist as it rises slowly from the riverbank. This picturesque scene unfolds each day, creating an ethereal ambiance where the hanging-foot houses and terraced fields, veiled in mist, blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings. The quiet villages, small hamlets, and the terraced landscape harmonize with nature, epitomizing the beauty of symbiosis between humanity and the natural world in Jiabang.
