Jurassic Park of China, Chishui – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and Highlights
Located in Chishui City, Guizhou Province, the Jurassic Park of China (中国侏罗纪公园) is situated in the transitional zone from the Guizhou Plateau to the Sichuan Basin, ranging in elevation from 290 to 1730 meters. With an average annual temperature of 17.7°C and a precipitation range of 1200 to 1300 millimeters, the park experiences a relative humidity exceeding 84% throughout the year.
Within the park, there are three main scenic areas for visitors to explore: Gan Valley, Dashui Valley, and Liangcha River. Dashui Valley predominantly features the ancient tree fern, Alsophila spinulosa, while Gan Valley is known for its waterfalls. The park’s landscape showcases dramatic changes in altitude, towering red sandstone cliffs, dense clusters of flowing streams and waterfalls, lush vegetation, and abundant species diversity, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a primordial forest.
The centerpiece of the Jurassic Park of China is the “living fossil” Alsophila spinulosa, also known as the tree fern. Belonging to the plant species dating back over 200 million years, these majestic ferns typically range from 1 to 6 meters in height, with some reaching up to 10 meters. Characterized by unbranched trunks and crown-like foliage, Alsophila spinulosa boasts an elegant and robust appearance, remaining evergreen throughout the year.
During the Mesozoic Era, particularly the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, Alsophila spinulosa flourished alongside large reptiles, including dinosaurs, earning its status as a symbol of that ancient era. However, following the extinction of dinosaurs and other prehistoric organisms after the Pleistocene Ice Age, the once abundant Alsophila spinulosa faced near extinction. Today, only a few specimens survive in suitable habitats, making it a precious relic of the pre-glacial period and earning it the titles of “King of Ferns” and “Last Living Remnant of the Jurassic Era.”
