Highlights of Western Zhejiang Tianchi
Flower Sea
In May, the area around “Tianchi” bursts into vibrant colors as the mountains are adorned with blooming vegetation such as azaleas, wild roses, hydrangeas, lobelias, and rhododendrons. The hillsides become a kaleidoscope of hues with the flowers competing in brilliance, creating a fragrant and picturesque landscape. Strolling amidst this floral paradise evokes a sense of being lost in a scene of eternal spring, reminiscent of the poem “Longing for Spring Yet Unable to Find It Anywhere, Unintentionally Ending Up Here.”
Magnificent Sunrise
Zaojun Rock, towering at over 1430 meters above sea level, stands as the tallest peak in the vicinity, commanding a majestic presence. Ascending to its summit in the early morning offers a perfect vantage point to witness the sunrise. As the sun gradually emerges from the eastern horizon, initially casting a pale glow resembling a fish belly, then transitioning into a halo of colors, before bursting forth in a radiant red orb, the surrounding peaks enshrouded in mist create a mesmerizing spectacle. The chorus of birdsong from the surrounding forests further enhances the tranquil ambiance, providing a sublime experience. On clear days, it is said that one can faintly discern the silhouette of Hangzhou city from the summit.
Ancient Pass
Located 500 meters north along the Tianchi Ancient Path is Tangling Pass, one of the “Three Passes of Northern Zhejiang” along with Qianqiu Pass and Yuling Pass. Strategically positioned atop a high vantage point, Tangling Pass is historically significant for its defensibility, earning the reputation of being impregnable. Flanking the pass are remnants of ancient city walls, believed to have been constructed during the Wu-Yue Kingdom over 2000 years ago, possessing considerable historical value. Further west, 300 meters from the pass, lies the site of an ancient Buddhist holy land, with roots tracing back to Huangbo Xiyun, also known as Master Tamingwood, who pioneered its development as a center of Buddhist practice.
