Linji Temple (临济寺), also known as Linji Ta Yuan, was established in the year 540 CE. Located in Zhengding County, it stands beside the Luhu River, from which it derives its name. In the eighth year of Tang Xuanzong’s reign (854 CE), the founder of the Linji Zen School, Master Yixuan, resided in this temple. Linji Temple holds great significance in the history of Chinese Zen Buddhism, as it is the birthplace of the Linji school, one of the major branches of Chan (Zen) Buddhism. Moreover, it also serves as the ancestral home of the Linji school in Japanese Buddhism.

Linji Temple is situated on Linji Road, Yanzhao South Avenue, Zhengding County, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province. Tourists from Shijiazhuang can first take a train to Zhengding Railway Station and then transfer to Bus No. 152 or a taxi to cover the remaining 5 kilometers.

The Main Hall

The main hall of Linji Temple, constructed since 1983 with funding from the government and generous donations from both Chinese and Japanese monks and devotees, holds immense spiritual significance. At its heart, a beautifully crafted sandalwood statue of Gautama Buddha exudes a tranquil aura, flanked by his foremost disciples, Kashyapa and Ananda. The rear wall features an image of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva. On the east side of the north wall resides Manjushri Bodhisattva, while Samantabhadra Bodhisattva graces the west side. In the southeast corner, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva finds its place. Moreover, both the eastern and western sides of the hall are adorned with intricately carved wooden statues of the Eighteen Arhats. This sacred space serves as the focal point for worship, meditation, and deep reverence within Linji Temple.


Heavenly Kings Hall

The Heavenly King Hall, also serving as the main entrance to Linji Temple, holds great spiritual significance. In its center rests a wooden statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva, believed to be an embodiment of Maitreya’s divine presence. Adorning the eastern and western walls are exquisitely detailed paintings depicting the Four Heavenly Kings. This hall warmly welcomes visitors with its tranquil atmosphere, and the statue of Maitreya Bodhisattva serves as a focal point for contemplation and devotion. Chengling Temple

Chengling Pagoda, located within Linji Temple, serves as the reliquary stupa for the esteemed founder of the Linji Zen School, Master Yixuan. After Master Yixuan’s passing, Emperor Yizong of the Tang Dynasty bestowed upon him the honorary title “Zen Master of Wisdom and Illumination” and named the pagoda “Chengling Pagoda.” This magnificent structure stands tall at a height of 30.47 meters, constructed using bricks and comprising a total of 9 tiers. It is adorned with intricate carvings featuring exotic flowers and birds. The upper section is skillfully engraved with three layers of lotus motifs, adding to its grace and spiritual significance as a cherished relic within Linji Temple.
