National Wetland Museum of China – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and Highlights
The National Wetland Museum of China (中国国家湿地博物馆), designed by Shinichi Ogawa, covers an area of 20,200 square meters with a height of 30 meters and an exhibition area of 7,800 square meters. It is divided into eight major areas across four main exhibition halls on one underground level and three above-ground levels. Through the recreation of typical wetland scenes, multimedia interaction, and textual displays, the museum showcases the beauty of wetlands and disseminates knowledge about wetlands to enhance public awareness of wetland conservation.
The museum’s exhibition content is primarily composed of four main thematic halls: the Prologue Hall, Wetland and Humanity Hall, China Wetland Hall, and Xixi Wetland Hall. The Prologue Hall introduces basic knowledge about wetlands and showcases world-class wetlands. The Wetland and Humanity Hall focuses on the relationship between humans and wetlands. The Xixi Wetland Hall highlights the unique characteristics of Xixi Wetland, including urban wetlands, secondary wetlands, artificial wetlands, and cultural wetlands, illustrating the historical changes and cultural significance of Xixi Wetland.
The design of the China Wetland Hall is particularly noteworthy for its immersive experience. Utilizing an open exhibition hall and a 160-degree panoramic cinema, it introduces the status, characteristics, and the relationship between wetlands and sustainable development in China. Visitors can embark on an ecological journey through seven types of Chinese wetlands, including mangroves in Guangxi Shankou, Dongtan in Shanghai Chongming, Poyang Lake in Jiangxi, the Sanjiang Plain wetlands in Northeast China, the Populus euphratica forest along the Tarim River in Xinjiang, the Sanjiangyuan wetlands in Qinghai, and the Hani Rice Terraces in Yunnan. Through lifelike recreations, visitors can gain a vivid understanding of phenomena such as salt secretion and viviparity unique to mangrove wetlands, the historical transformation of the Sanjiang Plain from “North Great Wasteland” to “North Great Granary,” bird migration patterns, and the contrasting landscapes between artificial and natural wetlands.
