Wulin Square, Hangzhou – Highlights and Location
Wulin Square (武林广场) is a prominent landmark situated on the north side of West Lake in Hangzhou City, China. Its name, “Wulin,” derives from its proximity to the ancient Wulin Gate. Surrounded by modern high-rise buildings, such as the Telecommunications Building, Hangzhou Tower, Hangzhou Theater, Hangzhou International Building, and Hangzhou Department Store, Wulin Square stands as the bustling garden-style central square of Hangzhou.
The centerpiece of Wulin Square is its iconic fountain, which was constructed in 1985. The fountain features a pool with a diameter of 36 meters, resembling a five-petal plum blossom, with a sculpture of three dancing maidens at its center. Surrounding the pool are five petal-shaped platforms, each adorned with a statue of a maiden playing a musical instrument. Some maidens play the pipa, others blow the bamboo flute, and still others strum the Chinese lute. The lively sculptures create an atmosphere of joyous celebration. During festive nights, synchronized with music played from eight sound poles, the main fountain shoots water jets up to 33 meters high, resembling orchids, water pines, and trumpet flowers. One hundred smaller jets around the pool also spray arcs of water, accentuating the spectacle with 75 colorful underwater lights, creating a dazzling and mesmerizing display.
In addition to the musical fountain, another landmark structure in Wulin Square is the Zhejiang Exhibition Hall. It has long been one of the most influential exhibition halls in Zhejiang Province. Located in the heart of Hangzhou’s famous tourist destination, the exhibition hall sits at the southern terminus of the bustling Yan’an Road, where high-end shopping, cultural venues, hotels, restaurants, and transportation facilities converge, attracting bustling crowds. To the north, it overlooks the thousand-year-old Grand Canal and the newly renovated park, along with a large underground parking garage. With its scenic beauty, convenient transportation, high foot traffic, and wide-reaching influence, the Zhejiang Exhibition Hall is an ideal venue for exhibitions and various events.
