Wuxie Scenic Area, Zhuji – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and Highlights

Wuxie Scenic Area (五泄风景区) is situated 30 kilometers west of Zhuji City, nestled amidst a range of mountains. It comprises four main sections: Wuxie Lake, Taoyuan (Peach Garden), Dongyuan, and Xiyuan Gorges. “Xie” refers to waterfalls, and the “Wuxie Stream” cascades down from the steep cliffs of Wuxie Mountain, forming five tiers of waterfalls, collectively known as the “Five Xie Creeks,” which are the highlight of the area. Visitors can enjoy water activities in summer, admire the red leaves in autumn, and witness the gingko trees turning golden in early winter.

Wuxie Scenic Area has long been renowned for its picturesque landscape, with legends suggesting it was the former residence of Xi Shi, one of the renowned Four Beauties of ancient China. Historical records such as the “Yue Jue Book” from the Eastern Han Dynasty, the “Shui Jing Zhu” from the Northern Wei Dynasty, and the “Sui Shu” from the Tang Dynasty all mention Wuxie. During the Tang Dynasty, the eminent monk Lingmo founded the Wuxie Zen Temple here, and the founder of the Caodong sect of Zen Buddhism, Master Liangjie, became a monk in this area.

Visitors typically begin their journey from Dongyuan, where the entrance to Wuxie Zen Temple is located, featuring a thousand-year-old gingko tree, a symbol of the scenic area. As visitors ascend, they encounter the five tiers of waterfalls, each with its unique charm. The fifth tier boasts a magnificent spectacle, with a majestic volume of water, while the higher tiers become increasingly graceful and elegant. The first and second tiers feature small, gentle waterfalls. In summer, the waterfall area offers a cool respite from the heat, making it an ideal spot to escape the summer heat.

Continuing upwards, travelers reach Liu Longping in the transition zone between Dongyuan and Xiyuan, where a teahouse provides a place to relax and enjoy tea. Not far ahead lies the highest point, Ziwei Ridge, offering breathtaking panoramic views and a refreshing breeze. Crossing Ziwei Ridge leads to Xiyuan, which presents a completely different landscape from Dongyuan. Here, the surroundings are characterized by moist mountain trails and murmuring streams, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere distinct from the grandeur and roar of Dongyuan.
