Yue Fei Temple, Zhu Xian Town – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and Highlights
Yue Fei Temple (岳飞庙), originally built during the Ming Dynasty in the Chenghua era (either in 1470 or 1478, sources vary), has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years to become what it is today. Covering an area of 18,000 square meters, the temple follows a layout of three courtyards facing south, with a rectangular outer corridor. The entire temple complex is exquisitely crafted and grand, narrating the story of Yue Fei to visitors.
Upon entering Yue Fei Temple, visitors are greeted by the Loyalty Archway facing the street. This beautifully constructed wooden archway features nine brackets on the lower section and four on the upper, showcasing intricate craftsmanship. Inscribed in the center of the archway is the title bestowed by Emperor Ming Xiaozong, “宋岳忠武王庙 (Temple of Song Yue Zhongwu Wang).” On either side of the archway, large stone tablets bear the characters “忠 (Loyalty)” and “孝 (Filial Piety),” each standing 1.8 meters tall, commanding attention with their dignified appearance.
Passing through the Loyalty Archway, visitors arrive at the main gate. This north-facing, south-opening structure consists of three bays, with fan-shaped walls on each side adorned with relief carvings of dragons playing in the water. Flanking the gate are a pair of stone lions. Under the eaves of the gate, a row of monumental plaques bears calligraphy by contemporary calligraphers Shu Tong, Chu Tunan, and Xiao Lao, inscribed with phrases like “Loyalty and Patriotism,” “Magnanimous Integrity,” and “Temple Legacy Through the Ages.” On the pillars, a couplet written by contemporary writer Wei Wei reads, “Upholding unwavering integrity; Strengthening the homeland’s mountains and rivers.”
Inside the temple complex, the main building is the main hall. The hall, measuring 18.30 meters wide and 11.60 meters deep with five bays, features a roof supported by a structure of five heavy and uplifted brackets. The architectural style is rigid and imposing, standing at a height of 10 meters. Inside the main hall, there is a colored statue of Yue Fei, standing at 4.3 meters tall, emanating solemnity and dignity. Flanking the main hall are various chambers and halls, including the Yue Fei Historical Exhibition Hall, the Rear Courtyard of the Main Hall, the Bedroom Hall, the Yue Yun Shrine, the Shrine of the Four Sons, the Shrine of Yue Ke, the Shrine of Filial Piety, and the Shrine of Three Generations, all showcasing the history and culture of Yue Fei and his family.
