The former residence of Zhang Juzheng (张居正故居) is located within the East Gate of the ancient city of Jingzhou. In the fifth year of the Ming Dynasty’s Wanli era (1577 AD), Emperor Shenzong granted 1000 taels of silver to support the construction of the mansion for Zhang Juzheng’s family. Initially named “Zhang Grand Academic Mansion,” it was later changed to “Zhang Wenzhong Duke’s Ancestral Temple” in the late Ming period and further referred to as “Zhang Former Mansion” in the early Qing Dynasty. Over the years, the residence experienced destruction due to wars and changes in dynasties. The restoration and reconstruction efforts began on June 6, 2007, and were completed on May 27, 2008, preserving this historical site associated with Zhang Juzheng, a prominent figure in Chinese history.

Zhang Juzheng’s former residence is located at No. 2 Jingnan Road, Jingzhou District, Jingzhou City, Provincia de Hubei, inside the east gate of the ancient city of Jingzhou. To get there, you can take bus 1, 12, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, 32, 33, 47, 51, 103, or 968 and get off at Zhang Juzheng’s Former Residence Stop (张居正故居站).


Who is Zhang Juzheng

Zhang Juzheng, born in 1525, displayed exceptional intellect from a young age. By the age of 5, he entered school, and at 7, he could comprehend the Six Classics. At 12, he passed the provincial examination for the title of Xiaocai, and at 13, he participated in the township examination. Remarkably, at the age of 16, Zhang attained the title of Juren, and by 23, in the 26th year of Jiajing’s reign, he succeeded in passing the imperial examination, becoming a Jinshi.

In the first year of Longqing’s reign, Zhang Juzheng assumed the position of Left Assistant Minister of Personnel and concurrently served as Grand Secretary of the Eastern Cabinet. During the early years of the Wanli era, as Emperor Shenzong was young, Zhang, succeeding Gao Gong, became the chief counselor, wielding considerable influence in military and political affairs.

Zhang Juzheng’s tenure as the chief minister witnessed bold and sweeping reforms across various facets of Ming Dynasty governance. His visionary leadership and decisive actions led to significant improvements in political administration, economic policies, and military strategies. He reorganized the bureaucratic system, strengthened border defenses, and notably enhanced the state’s financial stability. Zhang’s reforms surpassed those of historical figures like Shang Yang and Wang Anshi, leaving a lasting impact and offering valuable lessons for future generations to learn from in the annals of Chinese history.

Architectural Layout

At the entrance of the residence, a grand and towering stone archway stands prominently. Inscribed with the words “帝赉良弼” (Dì Lài Liáng Bì), meaning “The Emperor Bestows Wise Counsel,” the archway signifies imperial recognition of Zhang’s virtues and capability. Flanking the archway are couplets personally written by the emperor, adding an extra layer of historical significance.

The architectural layout of Zhang Juzheng’s former residence replicates the style of a five-section, four-courtyard structure from the Ming Dynasty. Covering an area of over 7,000 square meters with a built-up area of 8,478 square meters, the residence includes various sections such as the South Square, South Hall, Front Courtyard, Grand Tutor’s Residence, Middle Courtyard, Chunchong Hall, Holding-the-Sun Tower, Zhang Wenzhong Duke’s Ancestral Temple, Wenchang Pavilion, Divine Tortoise Pool, North Courtyard, North Hall, and Lezhi Garden. The main buildings within the courtyard follow a symmetrical axis, adorned with charming elements like small bridges, flowing water, artificial hills, and lush greenery, creating a harmonious and compact layout.
