Highlights of Erqi Square

Erqi Memorial Tower

Standing tall at the center of Erqi Square, the Erqi Memorial Tower commemorates the monumental 1923 February 7th strike of the Jinghan Railway workers. This impressive structure, constructed with reinforced concrete, rises to a height of 63 meters and consists of 14 floors. The tower features a distinctive design with its roof adorned in green glazed tiles, and at its top sits a bell tower housing six large bells with a diameter of 2.7 meters each. These bells melodiously chime the tune of “The East Is Red” at regular intervals, their sound echoing across several kilometers. Visitors can ascend the tower via spiral staircases to enjoy panoramic views of the cityscape, especially enchanting when illuminated by colorful lights at night.

Erqi Memorial Hall

Adjacent to the Erqi Memorial Tower lies the Erqi Memorial Hall, covering an area of 6,440 square meters. The main building, along with two auxiliary wings, comprises a two-story structure. The main hall, with its dimensions of 14 meters in height, 27 meters in width, and 57 meters in depth, houses a conference hall capable of accommodating over 1,500 people. Adorned with blue bricks and topped with red-tiled roofs, the hall features an emblem at its center and a cast iron relief depicting scenes from the February 7th strike below. The southern wing houses the “February 7th Historical Exhibition Hall,” spanning 435 square meters, while the northern wing serves as an activity space. Built with brick and wood in a traditional style, this hall stands as one of the earliest commemorative structures in New China, preserving the memory of the historic labor movement.
