Chenjiagou (陈家沟), also known as Chen Tai Chi Village, is a tourist destination located in Jiaozuo, Henan Province, China. It is renowned for its rich cultural heritage in Tai Chi, stunning natural landscapes, and significant historical sites. Originally named Changyang Village, it was established during the Ming Dynasty when Chen Bu, originally from Zezhou, Shanxi Province, migrated to the area. The village’s name was later changed to “Chenjiagou” due to the presence of a deep north-south gorge, with the “Chen” family flourishing in the region.

Chen Bu was skilled in martial arts and weaponry, and he established a martial arts society in the village, laying the foundation for generations of Chen family members to practice martial arts. During the late Ming Dynasty, Chen Wangting, the ninth-generation descendant of the Chen family, developed a new internal martial art form known as Tai Chi, integrating principles of Yin and Yang, as well as techniques from traditional Chinese medicine. Chen Changxing, the fourteenth-generation descendant, further popularized Tai Chi and had notable disciples like Yang Luchan from Yongnian, Hebei Province. Over time, Tai Chi evolved into various major schools represented by Yang, Wu, Wu, and Sun, among others, with Chenjiagou earning the reputation as the “Holy Land of Tai Chi.”

Chenjiagou features several attractions, including the Tai Chi Quan Ancestral Hall, built to commemorate the lineage of Tai Chi Quan masters. The hall consists of a mountain gate, stone inscriptions, a hall displaying martial arts manuscripts, ancestral halls, halls dedicated to martial arts demonstration and virtue, among others. Bronze statues of Chen Wangting, the founder of Tai Chi Quan, and inscriptions of Tai Chi Quan masters from different generations adorn the square within the ancestral hall compound.

The Chenjiagou Martial Arts Museum showcases a vast collection of artifacts and historical materials related to Tai Chi Quan, including manuscripts, equipment, and books, providing visitors with insights into the rich cultural heritage of Tai Chi Quan. Additionally, the museum offers interactive exhibits and educational programs to enhance visitors’ understanding of Tai Chi Quan.

Locatie en vervoer

Chenjiagou is located in the middle section of Qingfeng Ridge, 5 kilometers east of Wen County, Jiaozuo City, Henan Province, China, approximately 35 kilometers away from downtown Jiaozuo. To reach Chenjiagou, there are two main transportation options:

Take a long-distance bus from Zhengzhou to Wen County (32 RMB), then transfer to Bus Route 1 to Chenjiagou (ticket price: 2 RMB).

From Jiaozuo Railway Station South Square, there are four daily departures to Chenjiagou. The departure times are 7:30, 8:30, 13:30, and 14:30.
