The town’s name, Longtan, derives from its geographical features. Two pools, resembling the eyes of a dragon, often accumulate water under the Fulong Mountain. The ancient town is nestled between these “dragon eyes,” and the layout of the town, as it meanders through these features, resembles the shape of a dragon’s nose, hence the name.

It is situated approximately 40 kilometers away from the county seat and shares its border with Xiushan County. The town also boasts over 50 Tujia ethnic dwellings, with their striking hanging towers and upturned eaves.

A notable monument in Longtan Ancient Town is the “Anti-Japanese War and Founding of the Nation Martyrs Monument,” erected in 1939 during the resistance against Japanese aggression. Inscribed with the words “唯我将士，民族之光，牺牲热血，固我金汤，勒石纪勋，百世勿忘” by General He Shaozhou, the monument serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the nation’s heroes during a turbulent period in history.
