Gemu Goddess Mountain- Ticket, Opening Hours, and Highlights

Gemu Goddess Mountain (格姆女神山), also known as Lion Mountain, rises majestically with an elevation of 3,770 meters, towering over the surrounding landscapes of Lugu Lake in Lijiang. In the language of the Mosuo people, “Gemu” translates to “lion” or “white goddess,” endowing the mountain with spiritual significance as the embodiment of a goddess. Revered by the Mosuo community, Gemu Mountain holds a sacred place in their culture, worshipped as the divine protector of their land.

Each year, on the twenty-fifth day of the seventh lunar month, the entire community ascends the mountain to offer prayers and sacrifices, seeking blessings for prosperity and happiness. The rituals include burning branches in mountain caves to ward off evil spirits and bathing in waterfalls for purification and luck. Following the ceremonies, festivities ensue, with communal picnics, traditional songs, lion dances, swinging on swings, archery contests, and horse races, creating an atmosphere of joyous celebration and cultural heritage.

Nestled at the neck of the mountain lies the Gemu Goddess Cave, situated at an altitude of 3,450 meters. Facing Lugu Lake, the cave offers a panoramic view of the lake’s picturesque scenery, with its diverse islands, such as the distinctive shapes of Lige Island and Snake Island, dotted across its shimmering waters. Villages like Nise, Xiaoluoshui, and Dazui are nestled along the lake’s edge, while misty mountains form a stunning backdrop, shrouded in ethereal clouds. The entrance of the cave is adorned with offerings left by local residents, and to enter the cave, one must pass through three narrow passages, symbolizing a spiritual journey of purification. Inside the cave, illuminated by soft colored lights, the stalactites and stalagmites create an enchanting spectacle.

According to local folklore, in ancient times, the area around Lugu Lake was devoid of mountains. The goddess Gemu and her male counterparts would fly from the north to bathe in the lake at night, engaging in romantic encounters. However, one night, the rooster crowed, signaling dawn, and they were unable to return to the north. As a result, Gemu remained stranded by the shores of Lugu Lake, transforming into Gemu Goddess Mountain, while her male companions became surrounding peaks, including Hava, Zezhi, and Asha.
