Shiban Ancient Street (石板古街), built during the Ming Hongwu period, specifically between 1368 and 1398, stands as a remarkably preserved ancient architectural complex in Duyun City, Guizhou Province, China. Translated as “Stone Slab Ancient Street,” this historic site spans approximately 300 meters and has been transformed into a bustling tourist thoroughfare, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Layout of the Street
The street’s surface consists of around 11,000 blue stones meticulously laid out, creating a charming pathway. At each end of the street, visitors are greeted by a pair of stone lions, adding a touch of traditional symbolism. A classical gate structure marks the southern entrance, while the entire street is flanked by buildings constructed in a classical style. The architectural ensemble, comprising 88 buildings, features houses with flying eaves, towering pillars, intricately carved beams and columns, vermilion walls, and traditional blue tiles, exuding a simple yet elegant charm.
A Crucial Route
Originally, the northern slope of Shiban Ancient Street housed an ancient city gate, emphasizing the historical significance of this thoroughfare during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This section of the street served as a crucial route leading towards Guangxi during that era, strengthening the communication and connection between Guizhou and Guangxi. In 1638, the renowned traveler and geographer Xu Xiake visited Duyun and entered the city through this particular section of Shiban Ancient Street.
Restoration and Renovation
During the early 1990s, Shiban Ancient Street underwent comprehensive renovations and enhancements. As part of this process, the buildings along the street were meticulously restored, winding their way up the slope in a picturesque manner. The revitalized street now stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity, featuring a harmonious blend of ancient charm and classical elegance.

Shiban Ancient Street is situated on a sloping terrain in the middle section of Guanghui Road in Duyun City, Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province, China. To get there, tourists can take bus 5, 12, 16, Duyun 3, Duyun 4, Duyun 7, Duyun 12, Duyun 14, Duyun 27, Duyun 29, or Duyun 32, and get off at Xiaoshizi Stop (小十字站).
