Highlights of Yangzhou Museum
National Treasures Hall
Covering an area of 184 square meters, the National Treasures Hall is dedicated to a single masterpiece, the “Yuan Blue and White Plum Vase with White Dragon Design.” This vase, from the Yuan Dynasty, was produced at the famous Jingdezhen kiln and stands as an exemplary piece of large-scale ceramics. It showcases exquisite craftsmanship with vivid and pure blue glaze, embellished by a white dragon winding around the vase’s body. It exudes exceptional artistic charm, reflecting the highest level of craftsmanship achieved at the Jingdezhen kiln during the Yuan Dynasty. Only three of these vases have survived, with one held in the imperial collection at the Summer Palace, another at the Guimet Museum in Paris, both with damage. The one at Yangzhou Museum is the largest and boasts the most exquisite decorations.
Calligraphy and Painting Hall
Encompassing an area of 717.2 square meters, the Calligraphy and Painting Hall includes two exhibitions: the “Yangzhou Eight Eccentrics of Calligraphy and Painting” and “Ming-Qing Calligraphy and Painting from the Museum’s Collection,” featuring 66 cultural artifacts. The latter consists mainly of artworks of painters and calligraphers closely related to Yangzhou, while the former showcases the diverse talents of the Eight Eccentrics, each excelling in their own unique style.
Ancient Carving Art Hall
Spanning 526 square meters, this exhibition hall presents 135 artifacts classified into nine distinct categories based on materials: jade carvings, stone carvings, brick carvings, lacquer carvings, bone and ivory carvings, bamboo carvings, porcelain carvings, core carvings, and wood carvings. Each category represents the brilliance of ancient Chinese carving art. Jade carvings exhibit exquisite craftsmanship, while stone carvings often feature intricate designs. Brick carvings reveal the versatility of carving on a different medium, while lacquer carvings demonstrate the skilled use of color and lacquer. Bone and ivory carvings showcase intricate and delicate work, and bamboo carvings embody the traditional artistic expressions of the Chinese culture. Porcelain carvings feature designs on fine ceramics, core carvings utilize the core of fruits to create intricate designs, and wood carvings demonstrate the versatility of the material.
