Faxi Temple, Hangzhou – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and Highlights
Faxi Temple (法喜寺), also known as Shangtianzhu (上天竺), has stood in Hangzhou for over a millennium, tracing its origins back to the early years of the Later Jin dynasty, around 936 AD. It holds significant historical and religious importance as the birthplace of China’s White Robed Guanyin, a legendary figure associated with Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and revered as a sacred site within Chinese Buddhism. Renamed Tianzhujiao Temple during the Southern Song dynasty, it was later bestowed the name Faxi Temple during the reign of Kangxi Emperor in the Qing dynasty.
The present-day architecture of Faxi Temple gradually took shape after its reopening to the public in 1986. The temple complex comprises various structures, including the Mountain Gate Archway, Heavenly Kings Hall, Round Treasure Hall, Mahavira Hall, Liberation Pond, Dining Hall, Guest Hall, and East-West Corridors, all meticulously arranged in a solemn yet harmonious layout. Renowned for the miraculous powers of Guanyin and its thriving incense offerings, Faxi Temple has attracted numerous emperors and devotees throughout history. Particularly during the Ming and Qing dynasties, springtime witnessed a bustling scene as pilgrims from across Zhejiang and southern Jiangsu flocked to pay homage, culminating in the annual “Tianzhu Incense Market.”
In front of the Wuanguan Hall of Faxi Temple stands a majestic ancient Magnolia tree dating back to the Ming dynasty, boasting a history of over 500 years. This venerable tree has an average canopy width of 7.5 meters, towering 12 meters high with a trunk circumference of 280 centimeters. Adorned with moss and casting a broad shade over the courtyard, its impressive stature adds to the tranquil ambiance of the temple grounds. The flowering season of the ancient Magnolia is relatively brief, typically commencing in early March and lasting for about 7 to 10 days under normal conditions. However, rainy days may shorten this period to a mere 3 to 5 days. Revered for its deep-rooted cultural significance, the Magnolia holds a special place in Chinese history and culture, symbolizing refined qualities and noble sentiments.
