Shangfangshan Forest Animal World (上方山森林动物世界), located at the southern foothills of Shangfang Mountain with an area of approximately 67 hectares, is a haven for biodiversity and a testament to thoughtful planning and design. The climate in this region is conducive to the flourishing of diverse life forms, benefitting from abundant rainfall and a rich network of water bodies. The topography encompasses mountains, plains, wetlands, river channels, lakes, and ponds, providing a varied landscape that caters to the needs of a wide array of flora and fauna. And each enclosure and habitat has been strategically arranged based on the specific living habits of different animals.

The history of Shangfangshan Forest Animal World traces back to its predecessor, Suzhou Zoo, which was established on May 1, 1954. At that time, it was one of only two professional zoos in Jiangsu Province. However, on April 11, 2016, Suzhou Zoo closed its doors and relocated, reemerging as Shangfangshan Forest Animal World.

Endangered Animals

Presently, Shangfangshan Forest Animal World is home to over 100 species of animals, with 54% classified as endangered. Among the notable inhabitants are Sichuan golden monkeys, black leaf monkeys, takins, giraffes, white tigers, flamingos, jaguars, ring-tailed lemurs, kangaroos, white elands, and red macaques. Notably, the park hosts one of the three known living pairs of the Yangtze giant softshell turtle, with the female originally from Changsha Zoo, representing the last hope for the conservation of this critically endangered species.

Breeding Center for South China Tiger

In addition to these fascinating creatures, the park houses the Suzhou Breeding Center for South China Tigers, featuring 27 enclosures, including display cages, breeding pens, nursery pens, and isolation pens. The South China tiger, also known as the “Chinese tiger,” is one of the eight subspecies of tigers and is only found in various provinces in southeastern, southwestern, and southern China. The wild population of South China tigers in China estimated to be less than 20 individuals, while the captive population in all Chinese zoos totals only 55, including 15 at the Suzhou South China Tiger Breeding Center. This breeding population is internationally and domestically recognized as the largest, with the best demographic structure, offering the brightest prospects for the conservation and future development of this endangered species.
