Jiaju Tibetan Village – Ticket Price, Opening hours, Location, and highlights

Jiaju Tibetan Village (甲居藏寨) is nestled within the territory of Danba County in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province, approximately 8 kilometers from the county seat. It is a settlement showcasing the distinctive architecture and culture of the Jiarong Tibetan people.

The name “Jiaju” in Tibetan means a hundred households, and true to its name, the village is scattered across a mountain slope with an elevation difference of nearly a thousand meters. Tibetan-style houses, with their wooden and stone structures, dot the landscape amid lush greenery, accompanied by wisps of smoke from chimneys and clusters of peach blossoms, creating a tranquil and charming scene.

Typically, each household in the village occupies a residence, facing north to south. The structures are made of wood and stone, with red-colored wooden frames and eaves, while the walls are painted white or left in their natural color with alternating white sections. Before the arrival of the Chinese New Year, in adherence to traditional customs, the villagers use local “white mud” as the primary material to meticulously coat and decorate the walls of their houses, giving the entire village a pristine appearance.

Upon entering the village, one encounters scattered Tibetan-style houses, most of which are three to four stories high. The ground floor is often used for livestock, followed by rooms for cooking, living, religious activities, and family members. Some houses even feature balconies. The immaculate white walls are adorned with paintings of the sun, moon, stars, religious symbols, creating a beautiful and spectacular sight.

For those interested in experiencing local life through a “home visit,” a customary two-yuan admission fee is generally paid to the homeowner. However, this can be flexible, and in a hospitable moment, the host might waive the fee. Visitors can explore the interior decorations and structures of these picturesque houses, but caution is advised not to enter the religious chambers without permission. If greeted by a welcoming host, you may be offered butter tea and zanba, allowing you to experience the warmth and hospitality of the Tibetan households.

Highlights of Jiaju Tibetan Village

Traditional Tibetan Architecture

Jiaju Tibetan Village is renowned for its unique Tibetan-style tower buildings, with each family residing in an individual tower. These towers are generally oriented to face south and vary in their arrangement – some stand in close-knit clusters of three to five, while others are isolated, standing alone. Each tower covers an area of approximately 200 square meters and rises over 15 meters high, built using stone and wood.

The current form of Jiaju Tibetan houses perfectly preserves the essential characteristics of traditional Jiarong Tibetan architecture. This includes the use of natural, primitive materials and techniques, maintaining a traditional and rustic appearance. The wooden framework and eaves of the buildings are painted red, while the walls above the second floor are either whitewashed or display a combination of natural and white hues. This architectural style gives the buildings the appearance of devout Buddhists seated cross-legged in a meditative posture.

Every year, just before the Lunar New Year, homeowners follow traditional customs to prepare their homes for the festivities. They use a local “white mud” to create a white dye, which is then carefully applied to the walls of the towers, giving the entire village a pristine, celebratory appearance. This practice not only enhances the visual appeal of the village but also upholds the cultural heritage of the Jiaju Tibetan community.
