The Palace of the Queen of Heaven(天后宫), commonly known as “Niángniang Miào” in Chinese (娘娘庙), is a revered religious site located within the ancient culture street of Tianjin. Dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu, it traces its origins back to the Yuan Dynasty, boasting a rich history that distinguishes it as one of the few remaining ancient temples dedicated to the Queen of Heaven worldwide.

Situated in the heart of the ancient culture street, the palace beckons visitors with its combination of ancient architecture, vibrant folk displays, and lively temple festivities. Facing eastward from the west, the palace complex is comprised of various structures, including a theater, flagpole, mountain gate, archway, front hall, main hall, phoenix-tail hall, scripture repository, Qǐshèng Shrine, as well as a bell and drum tower, Zhangxian Pavilion, and four auxiliary halls. This collection represents one of the earliest existing architectural ensembles in Tianjin.

Today, the Palace of the Queen of Heaven serves as the location for the Tianjin Folk Museum. In addition to preserving the original layout of the temple, the museum has curated exhibitions showcasing Tianjin’s folk customs and traditions. These exhibitions systematically delve into aspects of local life such as transportation, marriage and childbirth, commerce, folk art, and folk beliefs.

A highlight of the Palace’s annual calendar is the celebration of the Queen of Heaven’s birthday on the 23rd day of the third lunar month. This occasion marks the grand Huanghui (Royal Festival), initially called “Niángniang Huì,” but later named “Huanghui” after Emperor Qianlong attended the festival during his southern tour. During this festivity, the entire ancient culture street comes alive with performances including dragon and lion dances, Shaolin martial arts, stilt walking, drum performances, dry boat displays, Yangge folk dances, martial arts demonstrations, as well as traditional Beijing opera, and clapper talk performances. The entire event transforms the vicinity of the Palace into a bustling and vibrant temple fair, making it one of the lively and culturally rich celebrations in Tianjin.
