Wuhan Zhongshan Park – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and highlights

Wuhan Zhongshan Park (武汉中山公园), originally known as “Xiyuan,” traces its roots back to 1910 when it was established as a private garden. In 1927, it transitioned into public ownership, and a year later, in 1928, it was renamed in honor of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, becoming “Hankou Zhongshan Park.” Over the years, it underwent continuous expansion, and today, this urban oasis covers a sprawling 328,000 square meters, with 268,000 square meters of land and 60,000 square meters of water bodies.

The park is divided into three main sections: the front, middle, and rear areas. The front area boasts a blend of Chinese and Western garden landscapes, featuring attractions like Chessboard Mountain, Sigu Pavilion, and Songyue Pavilion. Each season offers a different, picturesque view, making it a popular spot for locals to relax and exercise year-round. The middle section transforms into a modern leisure and cultural hub with notable structures like Shouxiang Hall, Zhanggong Pavilion, and a grand musical fountain. Lastly, the rear section becomes a vast ecological amusement park, offering over 40 thrilling activities, including roller coasters, Ferris wheels, white-water adventures, and bumper cars, all nestled amidst lush greenery. During holidays and weekends, many families bring their children here for a day filled with laughter and joy.

Highlights of Wuhan Zhongshan Park

Various Pavilions

The park is adorned with various pavilions and structures that contribute to its charm. One such iconic structure is the “Huxin Pavilion (Pavilion in the center of the lake),” constructed in early 1933. Originally named Shuixin Pavilion, it was a small wooden quadrangular pavilion. In 1942, it was transformed into Huxin Pavilion, and despite several renovations over the years, its exterior remains mostly faithful to the original design. Another structure is Kuaifeng Pavilion, a square-shaped, eave-adorned pavilion situated at the peak of the park’s rocky garden. It was initially built in 1953 and later reconstructed in 1984. Yuyiqi Pavilion, which has a unique history, was established in 1935 and then rebuilt in 1971, eventually becoming known as the “Culture Pavilion.” It has served as a venue for cultural performances and was affectionately dubbed the “Lovers’ Corner” where couples gathered during the 1950s and 60s. In 1984, it was renamed “Yuyiqi Pavilion.” In 2001, the pavilion was reconstructed on the same site, preserving its original appearance.

Shouxiang Hall (Surrender Hall)

Wuhan Shouxiang Hall, also known as the “Surrender Hall,” was constructed in 1935. Initially, it served as a public hall and was later renamed as Ti Jin Guan, Chong Hua Tang, and Zhang Gong Ci. On September 18, 1945, General Sun Weiru of the Sixth War Zone of the Republic of China accepted the surrender of the Japanese Sixth Area Army here, leading to its current name “Surrender Hall.” The hall covers an area of 355 square meters and features a brick and wood structure with a single-story rectangular hall, yellow walls, and green tiles. It faces west and retains its historical appearance. In June 1998, a surrender monument, inscribed by General Sun Weiru, documenting the surrender process, was discovered in the basement of Zhang Gong Pavilion. In 2000, Shouxiang Hall underwent restoration and was opened to the public.

Roller Coaster

In 1998, Wuhan Zhongshan Park allocated 5 million RMB to install the city’s first large roller coaster. This bright red attraction resembled a fiery dragon and was a symbol of courage and excitement for the people of Wuhan. Over 17 years of operation, it carried a staggering 3.5 million riders. When it was retired in December 2015, many locals flocked to the park to take pictures and bid farewell to this iconic ride. In 2017, a new spinning roller coaster was constructed at the same location. This modern roller coaster is taller, faster, and provides a longer ride experience, making it the first of its kind in the country when it was built.
