Yunlong Park, Xuzhou – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and Highlights

Yunlong Park (云龙公园), also known as Yanzilou Park, spans an area of 460 acres with a water surface of 120 acres. Located on the south side of Wangling Road in the urban area of Xuzhou, China, the park was originally a burial ground for both Christian and Buddhist communities. In 1958, after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, it was transformed into a public park. Notable attractions within the park include Zhichun Island, Yanzilou (Swallow Tower), and the Lotus Hall Pavilion.

In the northeast corner of the park, there is a mound covering approximately 400 square meters. The lush pine and cypress trees on the mound evoke a sense of ancient tranquility, with legend suggesting it may be the tomb of the mother of a Western Han Dynasty king. The southern part of the park features a flower garden with over 100 species of plants, including dragon cypress, garden cypress, water fir, wisteria, sword hemp, and roses. Yunlong Park is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, making it an ideal spot for morning exercises, reading, relaxation, and leisurely strolls.

Highlights of Yunlong Park

Yanzilou (Swallow Tower)

Yanzilou, one of the ancient “Five Famous Towers of Xuzhou,” holds a legendary status as the residence of the renowned Tang Dynasty courtesan, Guan Panpan. It is here that the poignant and faithful love story of Guan Panpan is said to have unfolded. Throughout history, literary giants such as Su Shi, Wen Tianxiang, Chen Shidao, and Yan Ermei have penned poems and writings expressing their admiration for Yanzilou. The tower, destroyed in the flames of war during the second year of the Tang Jingfu era, witnessed a series of constructions and demolitions over the centuries, with its location shifting. In 1985, the Xuzhou municipal government allocated funds to reconstruct Yanzilou on Zhichun Island within Yunlong Park.

Bonsai Garden (“Yi Lin”)

Located on the north side within the east gate, the Bonsai Garden, also known as “Yi Lin,” is a distinctive bonsai-themed park in Xuzhou. Covering a total area of 13,800 square meters, including a water surface of 4,300 square meters, the garden was completed and opened to the public in 1982. The architectural style follows the Lingnan school, harmonizing with the surrounding landscapes. The garden is a poetic and picturesque blend of carefully arranged scenic spots. With over 3,000 bonsai works on display, each reflecting strong local characteristics, visitors are enchanted by the artistry showcased in this unique space.

Lotus Hall Pavilion Area

Comprising a tea house, water pavilion, long corridor, and platform, the Lotus Hall Pavilion Area spans 914 square meters. This collection of buildings, situated on the mountain facing the water, exudes an ancient and elegant charm, serving as the main architectural focal point of Yunlong Park. From the pavilion, one can gaze eastward to the rippling lake, its waters reflecting the lush greenery of Yunlong Mountain. The interplay of mountain light and water colors is enchanting. During the summer, vibrant red lotus flowers vie for attention, and the landscape, with lotus leaves dotting the water, becomes even more captivating, providing an idyllic setting for contemplation and appreciation.
