Confucius Academy of Guiyang – Ticket, Opening Hours, Location, and highlights

The Confucius Academy of Guiyang (贵阳孔学堂), nestled against the majestic Dajiang Mountain and overlooking the picturesque Huaxi River, stands as a cultural beacon. The academy encompasses a vast land area of more than 1,320 acres, with a total construction area of nearly 150,000 square meters. Functionally divided into three key zones – the “Public Enlightenment Area,” the “Chinese Culture International Study Park,” and the “Cultural and Creative Industry Park” – the Confucius Academy is a testament to the enduring legacy of Confucian philosophy and the promotion of traditional Chinese culture.

The foundation stone for the academy was laid on July 3, 2011, and it was inaugurated on September 28, 2012, coinciding with the 2,563rd anniversary of Confucius’ birth. Since its opening, the Confucius Academy has been a hub for cultural activities and intellectual discourse, hosting over 100 public lectures on traditional culture annually. It celebrates various ceremonies such as the “Opening Ceremony,” “Adult Ceremony,” “Chinese Wedding,” “Respect for the Elderly Ceremony,” and the grand annual “Confucius Memorial Ceremony” held on September 28th. Additionally, the academy organizes cultural events marking traditional Chinese festivals like the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, Double Ninth Festival, and the “Twenty-Four Solar Terms.”

Cultural and artistic exchange activities are integral to the academy’s mission, including performances in the “Xishan Tage Songs” series, exhibitions of calligraphy and painting under the title “Xishan Hanji,” and various other cultural and artistic exchange events. The academy is committed to nurturing the younger generation, offering training in the “Six Skills”: music, chess, calligraphy, painting, poetry, and rites. It has established collaborative mechanisms with several renowned domestic universities and academic institutions worldwide, engaging in extensive academic exchanges and seminars, such as the Yangming Cave Summit and the Confucius Academy Four Seasons Debate.

The “Public Enlightenment Area” of the Confucius Academy begins at the Lingxing Gate, crosses the Pan Bridge, ascends through steps, passes through the Dacheng Gate, the Ritual Square, and the Dacheng Hall, culminating at the Xingtan (Apricot Altar). To the left lie the Xishan Academy and lecture halls, while the right side features the Palace of the Six Skills, the Hall of Virtuous Citizens, the Yangming Pavilion, and the Kuiwen Pavilion. In front of the Dacheng Gate stands a towering statue of Confucius, measuring 9.28 meters in height, serving as a monumental tribute to the great philosopher’s birth. The Confucius Academy of Guiyang, with its rich cultural offerings, stands as a testament to the enduring importance of Confucian teachings and traditional Chinese values in the contemporary world.
