Wanfenglin (万峰林), also known as the Forest of Ten Thousand Peaks, is located in the southern part of Xingyi City, Guizhou Province, China. Comprising nearly 20,000 unique peaks and lush green hills, Wanfenglin is one of the three major karst landscapes in southwestern China. Its dense and peculiar peaks, grand and majestic in scale, have earned it the reputation of being the “Museum of Cone Karst Landscapes in China” and are hailed as one of the wonders of the world.

Stretching from the edge of the Xingyi Qipeng Plateau at an altitude of over 2,000 meters to the northern shore of Wanfeng Lake, Wanfenglin extends into counties such as Anlong and Zhenfeng, with higher elevations in the northwest and lower ones in the southeast. The peaks of Wanfenglin are classified into five major types based on their shapes: Array Peaks, Sword Peaks, Dragon Peaks, Arhat Peaks, and Stacked Hat Peaks. These stunning mountains blend seamlessly with verdant fields, winding rivers, and quaint villages, creating a rare and picturesque karst landscape that is unparalleled anywhere else in the world.

During the rapeseed blossom season, visitors can enjoy a leisurely ride on a sightseeing train, meandering through fields of blooming rapeseed flowers, adding to the scenic charm of Wanfenglin. Highlights of Wanfenglin

Tiankengs

One of the must-see attractions in Wanfenglin is the Tiankeng, or “Heavenly Pit.” These pits resemble giant craters created by a colossal impact, adding an otherworldly charm to the landscape. While the exact number of Tiankengs in the area remains unknown, notable ones include Yugu Lu, Yangping, Diaojingba, and Xiafali. Yugu Lu Tiankeng, located 40 kilometers northeast of Xingyi City, is renowned as the largest Tiankeng discovered in China. With a flat bottom and trumpet-shaped walls, it boasts a depth difference of 600 meters, surrounded by towering peaks. The 126 households residing around the Tiankeng have built their homes and various tools out of stone, creating a unique stone village with stone foundations, walls, benches, roads, and utensils.

Husband and Wife Springs

In the Pogang area of Wanfenglin, there are two peculiar springs known as Husband and Wife Springs. Locals refer to them as “Divine Water,” “Strange Water,” or “Duo Duo Water,” with some playfully calling them “Male Spring” and “Female Spring.” These springs emerge from natural rock crevices and are connected by a natural “couple’s tape.” The Female Spring gushes water every 4-6 minutes, raising the water level by 3-5 centimeters, before converging with the Male Spring. When the Female Spring recedes, the Male Spring flows back towards it for a few minutes. This unique synchronization between the springs, akin to the relationship between husband and wife, is both fascinating and endearing. The water from these springs is crystal clear, resembling a mirror, and experiences minimal seasonal variations, maintaining its charm throughout the year.
